Simplify and limit the number of words

  • Limit your slides to 5 lines of text with no more than 6-8 words per line
  • Use key phrases and only include essential information
  • Avoid paragraphs, quotations and complete sentences
  • This prevents the presenter from reading directly from the slides

Let the slide breathe

  • Limit punctuation
  • Avoid putting words in all capital letters
  • Empty space on the slide will enhance readability

Avoid transitions and animations

  • Avoid the use of flashy transitions such as text fly-ins
  • These features may seem impressive at first, but are distracting and get old quickly

Quality imagery

  • Use good quality images that reinforce and complement your message
  • Avoid clip art at all costs
  • Ensure that your image maintains its impact and resolution when projected

Limit the number of slides

  • One slide per minute
  • Presenters who constantly “flip” to the next slide are likely to lose their audience

Size Matters

  • Aim for a majority of text to be 40-point font
  • Do not use font smaller than 24-point
  • Make certain all elements of any particular slide are large enough to be seen easily
