MCHCS Expands Psychiatry Services

Madison County Health Care System is expanding its psychiatry services with the addition of Amy Cooper, PMHNP. Amy will begin providing care for adolescents ages 12 and older and adults on Friday, July 17, 2026.

Amy brings more than 20 years of nursing experience, including approximately four years of practice as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Graceland University and her Master of Science in Nursing with a psychiatric mental health focus from Walden University. She is board-certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

The addition of Amy to our team will increase access to specialized behavioral health care for patients throughout Madison County and the surrounding area. She will help patients better understand and manage their mental health through:

  • Mental health evaluations
  • Medication management
  • Patient and family education
  • Individualized treatment planning
  • Coordination with medical providers, therapists and community resources

“Mental health needs are often underserved in rural communities,” said Marcia Hendricks, CEO of Madison County Health Care System. “Providing these services locally allows our patients to receive specialized care close to home rather than traveling long distances. We’re very pleased to welcome Amy Cooper and expand access to mental health services here in Madison County.”

Amy’s approach to care is patient-centered, collaborative and evidence-based. She strives to create a safe, nonjudgmental environment where patients feel heard, understood and respected. Her treatment plans are developed around each patient’s needs, values, circumstances and goals.

“Effective psychiatric care begins with building trust and understanding the whole person,” Amy said. “Treatment is not simply about medication. Each plan should reflect the patient’s needs, values, circumstances and priorities, and it should evolve as those needs and goals change.”

Amy has strong ties to both Madison County and MCHCS. She lived in Madison County for approximately 20 years before moving away with her family during the pandemic. Her family returned to the area one year ago to once again make Madison County their home. Earlier in her nursing career, Amy worked at Health Trust Physicians Clinic and on the medical-surgical unit at MCHCS.

“I look forward to returning as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner to serve the community that I love,” Amy said. “I want every patient to feel listened to, understood and respected and to know they have a trusted partner in their mental health care.”

Amy lives in Madison County with her husband and family. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with family, traveling, gardening and being outdoors.
