Strengthening Access to Preventive Screenings

The Madison County Health Trust Foundation has received a generous $25,000 donation from the Madison County chapter of Bras for the Cause. The funds will directly support uninsured and underinsured women in accessing vital breast and cervical cancer screenings, as well as diagnostic testing, through Madison County Health Care System (MCHCS).

This contribution, received on Giving Tuesday, reflects the community’s shared commitment to early detection and improved health outcomes for women across Madison County.

Supporting Early Detection Through Radiology

At MCHCS, the Radiology Department provides comprehensive imaging services, including 3D mammography and other diagnostic tools essential for early detection of breast and cervical cancer. Early identification of potential concerns greatly increases the ability to treat conditions effectively and improve long-term outcomes.

“Early detection makes all the difference when it comes to breast and cervical cancer,” said Kristin Wilkinson, Radiology Technologist at MCHCS. “This donation helps ensure that more women can access the screenings and diagnostic services they need, regardless of financial barriers.”

Community Partnership Improving Local Health

Bras for the Cause is known for its dedication to improving women’s health through local fundraising and awareness events. This latest donation demonstrates the organization’s ongoing support of community partnerships that expand access to quality healthcare services.

In 2024, Madison County Health Care System (MCHCS) continued to drive prosperity in Madison County with a $49.7 million economic impact, providing 326.4 local jobs and $23.6 million in wages. As one of the county’s largest employers, our organization strengthens the local economy and ensures families and businesses thrive.

Our economic footprint is matched by our dedication to community health. Last year, MCHCS delivered $1.1 million in direct community benefits, including charity care for uninsured or underinsured neighbors, health screenings, immunizations, wellness and support group programs, counseling, and outreach services. Through these vital efforts, we reached residents in need with 2,710 community service encounters in 2024.

“We’re proud to be a cornerstone of Madison County’s well-being and prosperity,” shared Marcia Hendricks, Madison County Health Care System CEO. “Not only do we create hundreds of meaningful jobs, but we actively invest in services that make life better for everyone in our county by delivering direct community benefits that touch lives far beyond our walls.”

Our healthcare system is vital to our local economy and quality of life. The hospital’s $49.7 million economic impact and hundreds of jobs mean stable families, strong schools and healthier neighborhoods.

This local impact reflects the broader power of Iowa hospitals, which together supported 141,708 jobs statewide in 2024 and contributed over $9.6 billion in wages and $22.9 billion in hospital expenditures to the state’s gross domestic product.

“These benefits aren’t just numbers,” said Chris Mitchell, IHA President and CEO. “They represent real programs and services that improve lives across Iowa. Many of these initiatives wouldn’t exist without the leadership and commitment of our hospitals and health systems.”

MCHCS remains committed to going beyond the bedside—fueling local growth, championing community wellness, and making Madison County a healthier, stronger place to live and work.

Madison County Health Care System (MCHCS) is proud to announce the recertification of its cardiovascular rehabilitation program by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). This certification is recognition of our commitment to improving the quality of life of patients by enhancing standards of care.

Cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation programs are designed to help people with cardiovascular problems (e.g., heart attacks, coronary artery bypass graft surgery) and pulmonary problems (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD], respiratory symptoms) recover faster and live healthier. Both programs include exercise, education, counseling and support for patients and their families.

To earn accreditation, MCHCS’ cardiovascular rehabilitation program participated in an application process that requires extensive documentation of the program’s practices. AACVPR Program Certification is the only peer-review accreditation process designed to review individual programs for adherence to standards and guidelines developed and published by AACVPR and other related professional societies. Each program’s application is reviewed by the AACVPR Program Certification Committee, and certification is awarded by the AACVPR Board of Directors.

In 2018, AACVPR moved to an outcomes-based process with performance measurements that represent more meaningful outcomes. Therefore, AACVPR-certified programs are leaders in the cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation field because they offer the most advanced practices available and have proven track records of high quality patient care. AACVPR Program Certification is valid for three years.

As we step into 2025, many of us are filled with renewed motivation to make positive changes in our lives. But let’s face it – New Year’s resolutions often fizzle out faster than champagne bubbles. In fact, studies show that a staggering 88% of people abandon their resolutions within the first two weeks of January. So, how can we break this cycle and transform our well-intentioned resolutions into lasting habits? Let’s dive into some practical strategies that can help you make this year different.

Understanding the Psychology of Habit Formation

Before we jump into specific tactics, it’s crucial to understand how habits form. According to James Clear, author of “Atomic Habits,” habits follow a four-step pattern: cue, craving, response, and reward. By targeting each step in this “habit loop,” we can design interventions to break bad habits and form good ones.

Start with Self-Awareness

One of the most powerful ways to change your habits is to focus on who you want to become, rather than what you want to achieve. Instead of saying, “I want to exercise more,” try saying, “I am an athlete”. This shift in mindset can drive your actions and make it easier to stick to your new habits.

Make It Obvious

The first step in forming a new habit is to make it obvious. Here are some strategies to do this:

Use habit stacking: Pair your new habit with an existing one. For example, “After I pour my morning coffee, I will meditate for five minutes”.

Design your environment: Make cues for good habits visible and hide cues for bad habits. If you want to read more, place books in prominent locations around your home.

Set clear intentions: Be specific about when and where you’ll perform your new habit. Instead of “I’ll exercise more,” try “I’ll go for a 30-minute walk every day after dinner”.

Make It Attractive

The more attractive a habit is, the more likely you are to stick with it. Here’s how to increase the appeal of your new habits:

Pair it with something you enjoy: If you want to exercise more, only allow yourself to watch your favorite show while on the treadmill.

Combine treats with tasks: Combine a habit you need to do with one you want to do. For instance, only listen to your favorite podcast while doing household chores.

Change your perspective: Reframe your habits to highlight their benefits. Instead of “I have to exercise,” try “I get to take care of my body”.

Make It Easy

The easier a habit is to do, the more likely you are to stick with it. Here are some ways to reduce friction:

Start small: Begin with tiny habits that take less than two minutes to complete. If you want to read more, start by reading just one page a day.

Reduce friction: Prepare your environment to make good habits easier. Lay out your workout clothes the night before if you want to exercise in the morning.

Use the two-minute rule: When you don’t feel like doing a habit, commit to just two minutes. Often, you’ll end up doing more.

Make It Satisfying

For a habit to stick, it needs to be satisfying. Here’s how to increase the reward:

Track your progress: Use a habit tracker or journal to visually represent your progress. Seeing your streak can be highly motivating.

Celebrate small wins: Acknowledge your progress, no matter how small. Each time you complete your habit, do a little victory dance or simply say “I did it!”

Use immediate rewards: Give yourself a small, immediate reward after completing your habit to reinforce the behavior.

Breaking Bad Habits

While forming good habits is crucial, it’s equally important to break bad ones. Here are some strategies:

Make it invisible: Remove cues for bad habits from your environment. If you want to eat healthier, keep junk food out of sight.

Make it unattractive: Associate bad habits with negative consequences. For example, if you want to quit smoking, visualize the health risks every time you crave a cigarette.

Make it difficult: Increase friction for bad habits. If you want to reduce social media use, log out of apps and delete them from your phone.

Make it unsatisfying: Create an accountability system or add an immediate cost to your bad habit.

The Power of Consistency

Remember, consistency is key when it comes to habit formation. It takes an average of 66 days for a new behavior to become automatic. Don’t get discouraged if you slip up occasionally – it’s part of the process. The goal is progress, not perfection.

Conclusion: Your Year of Positive Change

As we embark on this new year, let’s shift our focus from lofty resolutions to sustainable habits. By understanding the science of habit formation and implementing these strategies, you can create lasting change in your life. Remember, small, consistent actions lead to significant results over time.

So, what habits will you build in 2025? Whether it’s prioritizing your health, advancing your career, or nurturing your relationships, the power to change is in your hands. Start small, stay consistent, and watch as your new habits transform your life, one day at a time.

Here’s to a year of growth, positive change, and becoming the best version of yourself. Happy New Year!

As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, many people find themselves feeling more lethargic and down than usual. This phenomenon, known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or the winter blues, is a type of depression that occurs at a specific time of year, typically during colder months.

What is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)?

SAD is a mood disorder characterized by depression that occurs at the same time each year. While it can affect individuals during any season, it is most commonly associated with the winter months when there is less sunlight. The lack of sunlight can disrupt the body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm), leading to feelings of sadness, fatigue, and hopelessness. It is more than just a case of the “winter blues” and can significantly impact one’s daily life and overall wellbeing.

Symptoms of SAD

The symptoms of SAD can vary from mild to severe and often mirror those of major depression. They include:

Persistent low mood

Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed

Low energy levels

Sleep disturbances, such as oversleeping or difficulty waking up

Changes in appetite or weight, particularly craving carbohydrates

Difficulty concentrating

Feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness

Social withdrawal

In severe cases, individuals may experience thoughts of self-harm or suicide. It is crucial to recognize these symptoms and seek professional help if they persist.

While the exact cause of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is not fully understood, several strategies can help manage and alleviate its symptoms.

Light Therapy: Light therapy is one of the most effective treatments for SAD. It involves sitting near a light therapy box that mimics natural sunlight, usually for about 30 minutes each morning. This can help regulate melatonin and serotonin levels, improving mood and energy.

Spend Time Outdoors: Natural light can be beneficial, even on cloudy days. Try to spend time outside every day, whether it’s taking a walk, sitting on a balcony, or simply opening curtains to let in as much natural light as possible.

Exercise Regularly: Physical activity can boost serotonin levels and improve mood. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, such as walking, jogging, or yoga, most days of the week.

Maintain a Healthy Diet: Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can help manage energy levels and prevent weight gain. Limit the intake of sugary and high-carbohydrate foods that can cause energy crashes.

Stay Connected: Social support is crucial in combating depression. Make an effort to stay connected with friends and family through regular phone calls, video chats, or socially-distanced meetups.

Practice Stress-Relief Techniques: Activities like meditation, deep breathing exercises, and mindfulness can reduce stress and improve mental well-being.

Establish a Routine: Maintaining a consistent daily schedule can provide a sense of normalcy and stability. Set regular times for waking up, eating, exercising, and sleeping to help regulate your body’s internal clock.

Engage in Hobbies: Pursuing hobbies and activities that bring joy and fulfillment can distract from feelings of sadness and provide a sense of accomplishment and purpose. Whether it’s reading, crafting, or playing an instrument, engaging in enjoyable activities is beneficial.

Plan Winter Vacations: If possible, plan a winter vacation to a sunnier location. A change of scenery and increased exposure to sunlight can help alleviate symptoms of SAD and provide a much-needed break from the winter gloom.

Seek Professional Help: If symptoms persist despite self-care measures, it is essential to seek help from a healthcare provider. Therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and medication can be effective in managing SAD.

By understanding the symptoms and taking proactive steps to manage them, individuals can reduce the impact of SAD and maintain their well-being throughout the winter months. If you or someone you know is struggling with SAD, don’t hesitate to seek support from healthcare professionals.

We are Madison County Health Care System’s Senior Life Solutions outpatient program, designed to meet the unique needs of individuals typically 65 and older, experiencing depression and/or anxiety related to life changes that are often associated with aging.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health challenges, we encourage you to connect with a reputable mental healthcare provider and see how treatment may benefit you.

Chemotherapy sessions can take a while, and if you’re new to it, you might not know what to expect. There can be a lot of waiting as the medication is administered slowly, often over several hours. Before the infusion, you might also receive medications to help prevent nausea or allergic reactions. Chemotherapy can be emotionally difficult, but it also offers a chance to spend quality time with loved ones. While you’re connected to an IV, you have the opportunity to relax and focus on yourself. Here are some suggestions on what to pack for your chemotherapy sessions to help make the experience more comfortable and manageable.

1. Comfort Items

Since chemotherapy sessions tend to last awhile, it’s important to bring items that will keep you comfortable and occupied. Consider packing:

Books, magazines, or a tablet for reading

A portable DVD player or a tablet for watching movies

Games or puzzles

Snacks and drinks

Personal items like a toothbrush and hand lotion

Comfortable clothing for varying temperatures

You might also want to bring a cozy pillow and blanket. These items can provide both physical and emotional comfort.

2. Bring a Friend

No one should face cancer alone. Having a friend or family member with you can be very supportive. It’s a good idea to invite someone along, as they may appreciate the chance to help and spend time with you. Consider inviting different friends or family members to come with to your sessions – think of it as an opportunity to deepen your relationships.

3. Medical Records

While most clinics keep electronic records, it’s wise to have a copy of your medical records, especially if you’re receiving treatment at multiple locations. A summary of your diagnosis and treatment plan, along with recent test results, can be very helpful.

4. Make a List

When you pack your bag for your first session, create a list of items in your chemo bag to ensure you don’t forget anything for future appointments. Keep this list handy in your bag or on your phone.

5. Be Prepared for Nausea

Although nausea is less common with modern chemotherapy, it’s best to be prepared. Keep a bucket or plastic bag in your car for the ride home, just in case.

Summary

Chemotherapy can be a long process, and there’s a lot to remember. Packing a well-thought-out bag for chemotherapy can help make the process smoother and less stressful. Bring comfort items, invite a supportive friend and ensure you have all necessary documents. While nausea might not be an issue, it’s always good to be prepared.

The post What to Bring for Chemotherapy first appeared on Madison County Health Care System.

Every year, thousands of lives are lost due to sudden cardiac arrest. Immediate intervention with CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and the use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) can significantly increase the chances of survival. Understanding how and when to use these life-saving tools is crucial for everyone.

What is an AED?

An AED is a small, portable machine that can help restart someone’s heart if it stops beating correctly. It sends a small electric shock to the heart, which can fix the heart’s rhythm and make it start beating normally again. AEDs are made to be easy to use, even if you’re not a medical professional.

How to Use an AED

Turn on the AED: Most AEDs have an ON button or will turn on automatically when the lid is opened.

Follow the Voice Prompts: The device will give you clear, step-by-step instructions.

Attach the Pads: Place the adhesive pads on the patient’s bare chest as illustrated on the pads themselves. One pad should be placed on the upper right side of the chest, and the other on the lower left side.

Stand Clear: Ensure no one is touching the patient while the AED analyzes the heart rhythm.

Deliver the Shock: If a shock is advised, ensure everyone is clear of the patient and press the shock button.

Resume CPR: After the shock, or if no shock is advised, immediately resume CPR until emergency medical services (EMS) take over or the person shows signs of life.

When to Use an AED

An AED should be used when a person is unresponsive, not breathing, or not breathing normally (gasping). Time is critical in such scenarios. The quicker an AED is used, the better the chances of survival.

Understanding CPR

CPR is a way to help someone whose heart has stopped beating. It helps pump blood and oxygen through their body until their heart can start working again.

How to Perform CPR Correctly

Check Responsiveness: Gently tap the person and shout, “Are you okay?” to see if there is any response.

Call for Help: If the person is unresponsive, call emergency services immediately. If there are bystanders, instruct someone to find an AED.

Open the Airway: Tilt the head back slightly to open the airway.

Check for Breathing: Look, listen, and feel for no more than 10 seconds to see if the person is breathing normally.

Begin Chest Compressions:

Place the heel of one hand in the center of the chest, with the other hand on top, interlocking your fingers.

Position your shoulders directly over your hands and keep your arms straight.

Push hard and fast, compressing the chest at least 2 inches deep at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.

Give Rescue Breaths (if trained and willing):

After 30 compressions, give 2 rescue breaths.

Pinch the person’s nose shut, tilt their head back, and give a breath that makes the chest rise.

If the chest doesn’t rise, re-tilt the head and try again.

Continue CPR: Keep performing cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths until an AED is ready to use, EMS takes over, or the person starts to show signs of life.

Key Tips for Effective CPR

Push Hard and Fast: Ensure compressions are at least 2 inches deep and at a rate of 100-120 per minute. (Similar to the beat of “Staying Alive” by the BeeGees for reference)

Don’t Stop: Try not to take long breaks between pushes to keep the blood flowing.

Let the Chest Come Up: Make sure to let the chest come all the way up between pushes.

Knowing how to use an AED and do CPR can make a big difference in an emergency. With practice and knowing what to do, you can help save someone’s life when they need it most. Stay informed, be ready to act, and encourage others to learn these important skills too. You never know when you might be the one who saves a life!

The post Understanding AEDs and CPR: How to Save a Life in an Emergency first appeared on Madison County Health Care System.

Ah, the sweet bliss of summertime: warm weather, longer days, and endless opportunities for outdoor activities. But along with the joys of summer come the risks of orthopedic injuries. Whether you’re diving into sports or tackling your summer to-do list, it’s crucial to be mindful of your body to avoid unnecessary strains and pains.

Common Orthopedic Summer Injuries

Shoulder Strains: A Summer Staple

Summer seems to be the season of shoulder woes, with injuries ranging from rotator cuff strains to arthritis. Activities like volleyball, swimming, and yard work can put your shoulders through repetitive motions, leading to overuse injuries. Rotator cuff tears and strains are common culprits, often exacerbated by improper form or sudden movements.

Knee Woes: Handling the Pressure

The knee, a complex joint comprising various components, is vulnerable to a range of injuries during summer activities. Sports like soccer and baseball can lead to ACL tears or patellar tendonitis, while cardio pursuits like running or biking may cause long-term strain and fatigue. These injuries not only cause immediate discomfort but can also have lasting effects if left untreated.

Hip Hazards: Swimming Strains

Swimming, a favorite summer pastime, can also spell trouble for your hips. Overuse issues, such as labral tears, can arise from repetitive swimming motions, especially if proper form isn’t maintained. Poor technique may lead to bursitis or tendonitis, restricting hip movement and paving the way for more serious injuries.

Elbow Agony: The Price of Play

From golf swings to baseball pitches, summertime activities can take a toll on your elbows. Repetitive motions in sports like tennis and golf can strain tendons and ligaments, leading to conditions like tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow. Even everyday tasks like yard work can result in sudden tendonitis or fractures due to increased workload and repetition.

Ankle Anguish: Stepping into Summer Safely

Increased activity in summer can also increase the risk of ankle injuries, such as sprains or stress fractures. Whether you’re playing sports or simply walking on uneven terrain, a misstep can lead to pain, swelling, and instability. Prevention is key to keeping ankles strong and stable throughout the summer months.

Preventing Summer Stumbles: Tips for Injury Prevention

To ensure a summer free from orthopedic woes, it’s essential to take proactive steps to protect your body:

Warm Up: Prepare your muscles for activity with a thorough warm-up routine to prevent strains and tears.

Proper Form: Whether you’re swinging a racket or mowing the lawn, focus on maintaining proper form to reduce the risk of injury.

RICE Therapy: In case of discomfort or injury, remember the RICE method—Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation—to promote healing and reduce swelling.

Medication: Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications can provide relief from pain and swelling, complementing your recovery efforts.

By prioritizing injury prevention and listening to your body’s cues, you can make the most of your summer adventures without the fear of orthopedic setbacks. So go ahead, embrace the sunshine, and enjoy a summer filled with outdoor fun and excitement!

Need a Consultation?

If you’re worried about injuring yourself this summer — or at any time — with one of your favorite activities, it’s a good idea to see an orthopedist or physical therapist who can work with you to design a game plan that keeps your muscles, bones, and joints healthy and safe.

At Madison County Health Care System, we can not only help you prepare for a safe summer, but we also offer treatments for a variety of orthopedic conditions and injuries if anything does happen. Using both surgical and non-surgical methods, we will help you overcome pain so you can enjoy everything summer has to offer. Contact us at (515) 462-2950 for a consultation.

The post Avoiding Summertime Orthopedic Injuries: Tips for an Injury-Free Summer first appeared on Madison County Health Care System.

The Silent Threat

Every year, strokes affect millions of lives worldwide, leaving a significant impact on individuals and their loved ones. However, awareness and understanding of strokes can play a crucial role in preventing their occurrence and minimizing their consequences. So, what exactly is a stroke?

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. This can happen due to a blockage in the blood vessels (ischemic stroke) or when a blood vessel ruptures (hemorrhagic stroke). Without prompt medical attention, a stroke can lead to serious long-term disability or even death.

Don’t Ignore the Signs

Recognizing the signs and symptoms of a stroke is vital for timely intervention. The American Stroke Association emphasizes the “FAST” acronym to help people remember the most common warning signs:

Face drooping: One side of the face may droop or become numb. Ask the person to smile to check for asymmetry.

Arm weakness: One arm may become weak or numb. Ask the person to raise both arms to see if one drifts downward.

Speech difficulty: Speech may be slurred or difficult to understand. Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence to assess speech clarity.

Time to call emergency services: If you observe any of these signs, it’s crucial to seek medical help immediately. Time lost is brain lost.

Lifestyle Changes for Stroke Prevention

However, prevention is always better than cure. Adopting a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce your risk of experiencing a stroke. Here are some key strategies:

Maintain a healthy diet: Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Limit intake of saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, and sodium.

Exercise regularly: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week.

Why Pelvic Health Matters

At our clinic, we understand the pivotal role pelvic health plays in your overall well-being. Your pelvic floor muscles aren’t just there for structural support; they’re essential for maintaining bladder and bowel control, as well as sexual function. Our tailored therapy focuses on strengthening these muscles, alleviating discomfort, and preventing issues like urinary leakage. Start your journey towards wellness with our customized therapy plans, designed to address your unique needs and guided by our supportive therapists.

Our Personal Approach to Getting Better

Healing is a deeply personal journey, which is why we believe in crafting individualized therapy plans for each of our clients. Beyond physical exercises, we prioritize your emotional well-being, recognizing that pelvic health can be a sensitive topic. Our approach combines tailored exercises with emotional support, ensuring you feel empowered and comfortable throughout your healing process.

Understanding Pelvic Floor Problems

Recognizing the signs of pelvic floor dysfunction is the first step towards proactive intervention. From urinary leakage to pelvic pain, knowing what to look for can prompt early consultation with a healthcare provider. Pelvic floor issues can stem from a variety of factors, including pregnancy, aging, and certain lifestyle habits. By understanding these causes, we can work together to prevent or address pelvic floor problems effectively.

How Occupational Therapy Can Help

Pelvic health isn’t just about specialized exercises—it’s about integrating good practices into your everyday life. Our occupational therapy plans focus on practical strategies for managing symptoms in your daily routine. With personalized attention and collaborative care, we work alongside you and your healthcare team to develop a comprehensive plan tailored to your needs and goals.
