Welcome to Winterset, Iowa! (Madison County) Madison County is Des Moines neighboring county to the southwest and is considered the most scenic area in Central Iowa. The county was organized in 1849, and is named after James Madison, the fourth President of the United States. Madison county is primarily rural with rolling hills and very scenic limestone walled valleys.
Madison County is the home of John Wayne's Birthplace (Winterset), the famous Covered Bridges of Madison County and the birhtplace of the Delicious Apple. In addition, there are also attractions based on the local filming of the movie, The Bridges of Madison County. Winterset, the Madison County seat, features a famous court house built of native limestone and the annual Covered Bridge Festival.
