- Madison County Health Care System (MCHCS) is a modern 25 bed licensed critical access facility located in Winterset, Iowa, the county seat of Madison County. It is located approximately 30 miles Southwest of Des Moines, the Iowa State Capital. Winterset is 15 minutes South of I-80 and 15 minutes West of I-35.
- MCHCS is a tax-supported, not-for-profit institution established in 1949 to meet the needs of the 5,000 residents of Winterset and over 15,000 area residents including residents from Madison, Adair, Clarke, Dallas, Guthrie and Union counties.
- The medical center is served by five physicians and three mid-level providers. Twenty specialists bring their services to MCHCS to meet the needs of area residents. These specialties include Audiology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose and Throat), Neurology, Orthopedics, Oncology, Pain Management, Plastic Surgery, Podiatry, Urology, Vascular studies and Women’s Health. General Surgery is available 24/7 at MCHCS. Recruiting exceptional medical staff is an ongoing commitment.
- Our modern facilities allow our patients to receive services close to home using state-of-the-art equipment such as:
- A “40 slice” CAT scan machine.
- Mobile MRI and nuclear medicine.
- The Kodak PACS (Picture Archiving Communication System) is used in Radiology to store images and allows online reading by Physicians.
- Upgraded digital mammography equipment and procedures making it a less stressful and daunting process.
- New neoprobe gamma system
- Tertiary care via air ambulance is 20 minutes away door-to-door.
- Rehabilitation services through the Therapy and Chronic Disease Management Departments assist patients in returning to active daily living following an injury or an event.
- Employing approximately 175 full and part time employees, MCHCS is one of the county’s larger employers. Many of our staff members (about 35%) live outside of Winterset. In 2009/2010, MCHCS paid almost $9,000,000 in payroll and benefits to our staff.
- A 6,500 square foot addition (dedicated fall of 2007) houses surgery and recovery rooms, specialty clinics and medical records. This allowed us to add new procedure rooms, and a renovated administrative area.
- In December of 2011 we dedicated the new Medical/Surgical wing to the hospital. Providing 25 new private patient rooms each with bath the addition replaced rooms in the original hospital as well as in an addition from the late 1970s.
- Expansion and renovation of the Health Trust Physician Clinic has added approximately 1/3 again to the space available to our local physicians as well as provide space for some of our visiting specialists. Completion of the renovation of the clinic is anticipated in early 2012.
- Renovation is underway in the former patient area to create a new Chronic Disease Management and Therapy Department as well as a large classroom and additional office and storage space. Completion is estimated for mid 2012.
- Financially, in 2010 we generated a net income of $1,284,175.
- Charity care “write offs” were $378,205 which was an increase of almost 14.5% from 2009.
- We received gifts and donations in the amount of $55,558 which was an increase over the prior year of over 20%.
- The MCHCS impact is felt throughout the area through our services such as; Middle River Hospice, Health Trust Physician Clinic and Earlham Clinic.
